(Case Study) Domestic Pond Silt Removal Using a Truxor Machine

The Challenge

Domestic pond before silt removal showing shallow water and lily overgrowth

This project involved a private domestic pond that had gradually become heavily silted over time.

The client had started to notice several issues:

  • Water levels appearing lower than normal

  • Areas of the pond beginning to dry out

  • Significant build-up of soft sediment around the margins

  • Lilies spreading aggressively across the surface

As the depth reduced, conditions became ideal for plant growth. The lilies had begun to take over large areas, and the pond was starting to lose usable water space.

Without intervention, the pond would have continued to shallow and become increasingly overgrown.

Our Solution

To restore the pond, we carried out mechanical silt removal using a Truxor amphibious machine, supported by low ground pressure land-based machinery.

This allowed us to:

  • Work directly within the water without draining the pond

  • Safely operate on soft ground conditions

  • Minimise disruption to the surrounding landscaped areas

During the works, we:

  • Removed approximately 0.5 metres of accumulated silt from the lakebed

  • Extracted nutrient-rich sediment that was driving excessive plant growth

  • Reinstated depth across shallow areas that had begun to dry out

All material was carefully handled using low ground pressure equipment to avoid damaging the banks.

The Results

Domestic pond after dredging showing restored depth and clearer water

The transformation was immediate.

  • Water depth was restored across the pond

  • Previously exposed and drying areas were reinstated

  • Lily growth was significantly reduced

  • The pond returned to a much cleaner, more open condition

By removing the built-up sediment, the pond is now far easier to manage moving forward.

Why Silt Removal Was Necessary

This is a common issue we see with domestic ponds.

Over time, materials such as:

  • Leaves

  • Dead aquatic vegetation

  • Organic runoff

Settle on the lakebed and gradually build up.

As this layer thickens:

  • Depth reduces

  • Sunlight reaches the bottom more easily

  • Aquatic plants grow more aggressively

In this case, the excessive lily growth and drying margins were clear signs that silt removal was required.

Long-Term Benefits

Following the works:

  • The pond has regained usable depth

  • Plant growth is now more controlled

  • The overall appearance has improved significantly

  • Future maintenance will be much more manageable

Addressing silt build-up at this stage prevents the pond from continuing to deteriorate.

Domestic Pond Silt Removal

We carry out silt removal and dredging for domestic ponds and lakes across the UK, using specialist amphibious and low ground pressure machinery.

Each project is tailored depending on:

  • Access

  • Silt levels

  • Surrounding environment

If your pond is becoming shallow, overgrown, or difficult to manage, it’s often a sign that silt is starting to take over.
