Algae Control Solutions

Algae growth is a common challenge for pond and lake owners, often leading to murky water, unpleasant odours, and an unbalanced ecosystem. At Simply Aquatic, we provide expert solutions to keep your water clear and thriving.

Understanding Algae Growth

Algae flourish in nutrient-rich water, particularly where there is an excess of phosphates and nitrates from fertilisers, organic debris, and fish waste. Sunlight exposure and stagnant water further contribute to algae blooms, creating ideal conditions for unwanted growth.

There are several types of algae that may affect your pond. Green water algae, also known as planktonic algae, turn water a murky pea-green colour. Filamentous algae, often called string algae or blanket weed, form long, hair-like strands that cling to rocks and plants. Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, can be particularly concerning as they may produce toxins harmful to fish, wildlife, and pets.

How to Control Algae in Your Pond or Lake

Effective algae control requires a combination of prevention and treatment. One of the most important steps is reducing excess nutrients in the water. Limiting fertiliser use near the pond, regularly removing decaying plant matter, and introducing aquatic plants can help absorb unwanted nutrients before they fuel algae growth.

Improving water circulation is another key strategy. Installing a pond aerator or fountain increases oxygen levels and prevents stagnation, making it harder for algae to thrive. Beneficial pond bacteria treatments can also aid in breaking down organic waste naturally.

Phoslock: Advanced Algae Control

At Simply Aquatic, we use Phoslock, a highly effective treatment that controls algae growth by removing excess phosphorus—the primary nutrient responsible for algae blooms. This advanced solution works by binding with dissolved phosphates in the water, preventing them from fuelling further algae growth.

Phoslock is safe for fish, plants, and wildlife, making it an environmentally friendly choice for long-term algae control. Once applied, it rapidly removes phosphorus from the water column and settles as an inert material on the pond or lake bed, ensuring that algae no longer have the nutrients needed to thrive.

Algae Control Using the Truxor

Combined with the above Phoslock treatment, we use the Truxor amphibious machine for efficient and eco-friendly algae control. This versatile machine is specially designed for managing aquatic vegetation, including filamentous and floating algae, without harming the surrounding ecosystem.

The Truxor is equipped with various attachments that allow us to mechanically remove algae from the water’s surface and shoreline. Unlike chemical treatments that may only offer temporary relief, physical removal using the Truxor provides immediate results and helps restore water clarity.

By extracting algae and organic debris, we also reduce excess nutrients, preventing future blooms and improving overall water quality.

This method is particularly beneficial for larger ponds and lakes where algae growth has become excessive. The Truxor’s lightweight design allows it to operate in sensitive environments without damaging the pond bed, making it an ideal solution for conservation areas and private water bodies alike.
