(Case Study) Blanketweed Removal with the Truxor

Project Overview
Simply Aquatic was contacted by a private pond owner who was experiencing significant blanketweed growth across the surface of their lake.
During the warmer months, blanketweed had rapidly spread across large areas of the waterbody, reducing the visual appeal of the pond and restricting areas of open water.
The client wanted to improve the appearance of the pond and remove as much blanketweed as possible before it continued to spread further.
The Challenge
Blanketweed is one of the most common pond management issues encountered throughout the UK.
Unlike many aquatic plants, blanketweed can grow quickly during favourable conditions, forming dense floating mats across the water surface.
In this case, blanketweed had become established across a significant proportion of the pond, impacting both the appearance of the waterbody and the enjoyment of the surrounding area.

Our Approach
Using our Truxor amphibious machine, we carefully removed blanketweed from the pond surface.
The Truxor allowed us to access large areas of the pond efficiently while collecting and removing the floating material from the water.
All removed blanketweed was deposited on the bank for disposal and natural drying.
This process immediately restored significant areas of open water and improved the overall appearance of the pond.

The Results
Following completion of the works, the pond was transformed from a blanketweed-dominated waterbody to a much cleaner and more visually appealing feature.
The project achieved:
Removal of large quantities of blanketweed
Increased areas of open water
Improved visual appearance
Easier enjoyment of the pond
Removal of organic material from the waterbody
The before and after photographs clearly demonstrate the difference achieved through physical blanketweed removal.

Managing Blanketweed Long Term
While physical removal is often the quickest way to improve the appearance of a pond, blanketweed management should be viewed as an ongoing process.
Blanketweed growth is typically influenced by a combination of sunlight, nutrient levels and water conditions.
For some ponds, additional management measures such as biological treatments, nutrient reduction or silt management may help reduce future growth.
However, physically removing blanketweed remains one of the most effective ways of achieving an immediate improvement.
