(Case Study) Balancing Pond Bulrush Reduction & Water Flow Improvement

At Simply Aquatic, we were instructed to carry out specialist aquatic maintenance works on an overgrown balancing pond where bulrush and marginal vegetation had gradually begun restricting open water and water movement throughout the pond system.
Over time, the pond had become heavily encroached with bulrush growth, reducing both the visual appearance of the pond and restricting access to key inlet and outlet areas.
Using our specialist Truxor amphibious machine, we carried out targeted bulrush reduction works to restore open water areas and improve overall pond function.
The Challenge
The balancing pond had experienced significant bulrush encroachment around the pond margins and across sections of open water.
This had resulted in:
Reduced open water
Restricted water movement
Limited visibility of headwalls
Reduced access for future maintenance
Increased vegetation build-up around inlet and outlet areas
As with many balancing ponds and SuDS features, the aquatic vegetation had gradually spread over several growing seasons, slowly reducing the pond’s effective open water area.

Our Solution
Using the Truxor amphibious machine, we carried out selective bulrush reduction works throughout the balancing pond.
The works included:
Root extraction of the encroaching bulrush
Opening up sections of restricted watercourse
Clearing around headwalls and flow routes
Improving water movement throughout the pond
Creating improved access for future inspection and maintenance
The Truxor allowed works to be completed directly from within the water while minimising disturbance to the surrounding banks and soft ground conditions.

Habitat Considerations
All removed vegetation was deposited in designated areas around the pond edge to create habitat piles.
Leaving arisings temporarily on site helps:
Allow insects and aquatic life to return to the water
Create additional habitat areas
Reduce unnecessary disturbance
Support biodiversity around the pond margins
Where possible, we aim to balance functional maintenance works with ecological considerations and habitat retention.
The Result
Following the works:
Open water areas were restored
Water flow paths were improved
Headwalls became more accessible and visible
Encroaching bulrush growth was reduced
The balancing pond became easier to inspect and maintain moving forward
While vegetation management is often an ongoing requirement on balancing ponds, periodic aquatic maintenance can significantly improve both pond function and long-term manageability.
