(Case Study) Reed & Bulrush Removal for a Domestic Lake Using a Truxor

  • 2 min read

This project was for a private domestic lake that had gradually become overrun with reeds and bulrush (reed mace).

Over time, the vegetation had:

  • Spread aggressively across the margins

  • Reduced the amount of usable open water

  • Started to establish along the banks

  • Allowed self-seeding trees to take hold within the reed beds

The lake was beginning to feel much smaller, with access becoming increasingly difficult.

As is often the case with domestic lakes, the growth hadn’t been managed for several seasons—allowing the root systems to fully establish.

Truxor removing reeds

Our Solution:

To tackle the issue effectively, we used our Truxor amphibious machine to carry out a full root removal in key areas.

The approach included:

  • Grubbing out established reeds and bulrush

Rather than just cutting, the Truxor was used to pull out sections of the root system where possible. This helps slow down regrowth and provides a longer-lasting result.

  • Removal of self-seeded trees

Small trees that had established within the reed beds were also removed during the process, preventing further bank encroachment.

  • Working directly from the water

This minimised disturbance to the banks and allowed access to areas that would be difficult to reach with land-based machinery.

  • Controlled deposition of arisings

All removed material was placed along the banks in suitable areas, allowing it to drain naturally.

This method is particularly effective for domestic lakes where access can be limited and a tidy finish is required.

The Results

Truxor reed cutting

The transformation was immediate.

  • Large areas of open water were restored

  • The lake edges were clearly defined again

  • Access around the lake was significantly improved

  • Problematic vegetation was brought back under control

By removing the reeds and the early-stage tree growth, the lake is now in a much more manageable condition moving forward.

Ongoing Management

Like most aquatic vegetation, reeds and bulrush will regrow over time.

However, after an initial clearance like this:

  • Future maintenance becomes far more straightforward

  • Smaller follow-up visits can keep growth under control

  • The lake can be maintained without returning to its previous condition

Reed & Bulrush Removal for Domestic Lakes

If your lake is starting to become overgrown, early intervention makes a big difference.

We regularly carry out reed and bulrush removal for domestic lakes across the UK using specialist amphibious machinery.

Each site is different, so the best approach depends on:

  • The density of growth

  • Access to the water

  • The condition of the lakebed and banks

Feel free to get in touch to discuss your lake or send over some photos for initial advice.
